The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has recognized Toyota Motor Manufacturing North America, Inc., with the ENERGY STAR Sustained Excellence 2006 Award for its continued leadership in protecting our environment through energy efficiency. Toyota's accomplishments will be recognized at an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. on March 21, 2006.
Toyota, an ENERGY STAR partner since 2003, will be honored for its long-term commitment to energy efficiency and management of energy consumption across its manufacturing operations in the U.S. Across the U.S., top companies and organizations are discovering the value of promoting energy efficiency through participation in ENERGY STAR. Last year alone, with the help of ENERGY STAR, Americans saved $12 billion on their energy bills and enough peak energy to power 28 million homes. Through those savings they avoided greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to those of more than 23 million vehicles.
"For Toyota, protecting the environment by reducing greenhouse gas emission while improving energy efficiency continues to be a major priority," said Bruce Bremer, manager of facility engineering at Toyota Motor Manufacturing North America, Inc. "As an ENERGY STAR partner for several years, we see the great value of energy efficiency and so do our team members and customers. ENERGY STAR is a cornerstone of our organization and a win for everyone."
The Sustained Excellence 2006 Award is given to a select group of organizations that have exhibited outstanding leadership year after year. They have set and achieved aggressive goals, employed innovative approaches, and shown others what can be achieved through energy efficiency. These awards recognize ongoing leadership across the ENERGY STAR program including energy-efficient products, services, new homes and in the commercial, industrial and public sectors. These Award winners are selected from thousands of organizations that participate in the ENERGY STAR program.
"Partners like Toyota are national leaders in energy efficiency," said Kathleen Hogan, director of EPA's Climate Protection Partnerships Division. "The ENERGY STAR Sustained Excellence winners are true models for improving energy efficiency across the country. They have shown year after year that energy efficiency is good for business and helps consumers save important resources, all while protecting the environment."
Toyota (NYSE:TM) established operations in North America in 1957 and currently operates 14 manufacturing plants including two under construction. There are more than 1,700 Toyota, Lexus and Scion dealerships in North America which sell more than 2.5 million vehicles a year. Toyota directly employs over 38,000 in North America and its investment here is currently valued at more than $16.8 billion, including sales and manufacturing operations, research and development, financial services and design. Toyota's annual purchasing of parts, materials, goods and services from North American suppliers totals more than $26 billion.
According to a 2005 Center for Automotive Research study, Toyota, along with its dealers and suppliers, has generated nearly 400,000 U.S. jobs, including jobs created through spending by direct, dealer and suppliers employees.
Toyota produces 10 vehicles in North America, including the Avalon, Camry, Corolla, Matrix, Sienna, Solara, Sequoia, Tacoma, Tundra and the Lexus RX 330. By 2008, Toyota will have the annual capacity to build about 2 million cars and trucks, 1.44 million engines and 600,000 automatic transmissions in North America.
