- Mazda to Debut CX-9 Crossover SUV and MAZDASPEEED3 Performance Compact-
NEW YORK - Mazda is set to take over the Big Apple as the all-new seven-passenger 2007 CX-9 crossover SUV makes its global debut here at the 2006 New York International Auto Show. Also debuting will be the 250-plus horsepower MAZDASPEED3, being shown for the first time in North America. The New York International Auto Show (NYIAS) opens to the public on Friday, April 14.
"Beginning with the launch of the MAZDA6 in 2003, we have made a strong commitment to bring exciting, fun-to-drive vehicles to the North American market, and our showroom is proof of the results of our work," said Jim O'Sullivan, president and CEO, Mazda North American Operations. "With the introduction of the CX-7 crossover in Detroit in January and now the CX-9 crossover here in New York, Mazda is expanding our lineup into segments in which we do not currently compete - that's the key to our future growth and success."
The design of the Mazda CX-9 sets new standards for style, while incorporating an interior of sophisticated elegance with class-leading space and unmatched versatility. While styling echoes the recently introduced CX-7, CX-9 is not a lengthened three-row CX-7, and CX-7 should not be considered to be a shorter-wheelbase CX-9.
Mazda CX-9 targets young couples and modern families with a focus on family interests, who haven't lost their desire for high-intensity leisure activities, learning experiences and social interaction. It is also ideal for couples with grown children who pursue an active lifestyle.
Every CX-9 is powered by a3.5-liter V6 engine driven through a standard six-speed automatic transmission. Final drive is through either front- or all-wheel drive. Brakes are large ventilated discs on all four wheels.
Also debuting in New York, the 2007 MAZDASPEED3 will be the flagship of the MAZDA3 range when it launches in fall 2006. With its compact, lightweight body and maximum power in excess of 250-horsepower from a 2.3-liter DISI (Direct Injection Spark Ignition) Turbo engine, MAZDASPEED3 will be one of the highest performance front-wheel drive cars in the world when it hits the highway.
MAZDASPEED3 's styling immediately conveys the car's dynamic performance. Boldly flared front fenders and strong edges on the hood combine with the functional forms of the bumpers, spoilers and other parts developed for outstanding aerodynamic performance. Overall, MAZDASPEED3 's design is sporty and strong without exaggerated styling cues.
In addition, the recently introduced CX-7 will make its New York debut. Produced entirely on Mazda-derived platform architecture, the five-seat CX-7 embodies an astute blend of sports car verve and SUV practicality, resulting in a fun-to-drive SUV with Mazda's trademark "Soul of a Sportscar". Pricing for the CX-7 will begin at $23,750 for the front-wheel-drive Sport model.
Prominent front fenders, A-pillars rooted at the body's leading edge, a sharply raked windshield and Mazda's signature five-pointed grille clearly register this new model as a Mazda.
CX-7 is fitted with a turbocharged and intercooled 2.3-liter four-cylinder direct-injection gasoline engine similar to that fitted to the MAZDASPEED3, but producing 244 horsepower in this application. Mazda CX-7 delivers an estimated 23 mpg in combined driving.
Also on display in New York is the Kabura Concept. Debuting at January's Detroit Auto Show, Kabura provides customers with stylish, insightful, spirited styling befitting a next-generation Mazda sports car. The Kabura is a concept that ventures beyond the compact sports coupe norm to explore several fresh ideas that could appear in future production models.
The Kabura Concept's exterior, as described by Design Director Franz von Holzhausen, is "a nimble-looking fuselage with a powerful stance, pronounced wheel arches, and taut surfaces." Inside, Kabura features an innovative3+1 layout that resolves seating capacity issues in common 2+2 coupes.
Mazda also will display the Tribute Hybrid gasoline-electric sport utility vehicle, which offers superior environmental performance thanks to its MZR 2.3-liter gasoline engine and quiet and powerful electric motor. The system operates seamlessly on both gasoline and electricity, and delivers ample on-the-road performance.
Mazda recently donated30 clean-burning, fuel efficient Tribute Hybrid prototypes to fire agencies throughout Southern California. A specially designed Tribute Hybrid clad with each agency's logo will be on display at the Mazda booth.
Mazda's full 2006 lineup also will be on display including the MX-5 Miata, MAZDA3, MAZDA6, MAZDASPEED6, Tribute, MPV and B-Series truck.
In addition to the product display inside the convention center, Mazda also will offer show-goers a free outdoor display across from Jacob Javits Center called " ZOOM-ZOOM CITY." Inside a large tented structure, consumers will have a chance to experience Mazda's Zoom-Zoom attitude and learn more about its full lineup of vehicles. This immersive walk-through experience will be broken into three distinctive "zones," (Fast, Cool, Fun) each zone bringing to life a different dimension of the Mazda story and the different products' relevance.
Headquartered in Irvine, Calif., Mazda North American Operations oversees the sales, marketing, parts and customer service support of Mazda vehicles in the United States, Canada and Mexico through nearly 900 dealers. Operations in Canada are managed by Mazda Canada, Inc., located in Ontario, Canada, and in Mexico by Mazda Motor de Mexico in Mexico City.
