Toyota Celebrates 20th Year in Kentucky - Positive impact extends beyond business to improve community, environment

"It was pretty apparent that Toyota would be a good thing for Kentucky and the Bluegrass," observes Gary Convis, President of Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky (TMMK). "But looking back over the past 20 years, it's surprising in how many ways the Georgetown plant and its team members have really touched our citizens and communities."
In the years since its incorporation in 1986, TMMK has seen its impact grow across the Commonwealth in significant ways, many of which are surprisingly below the radar.
Home to approximately 7,000 employees, "Toyota Georgetown" has churned out literally millions of cars, engines and parts such as axles, crankshafts and the like over the past 20 years. In fact, the Kentucky-built Camry has been the best-selling car in the U.S. for eight of the past nine years. Interestingly, most of the content for those products comes from more than 350 independent U.S. suppliers, including about 90 located right here in Kentucky.
"Our commitment to local and regional suppliers is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of the many ways in which TMMK has been a good neighbor and a good corporate citizen for Kentucky," explains Convis. "Toyota has invested roughly $5.3 billion in our physical plant, and our annual payroll is more than half a billion dollars. That represents a huge amount of tax dollars each year for Kentucky and surrounding states."
Perhaps less obviously, TMMK has also given in excess of $26 million in charitable contributions and sponsorships since 1986. This support has been directed toward organizations associated with education, civic groups, health and human services, culture and the arts, and the environment. And team member involvement in the community reaches far beyond that.
Toyota is planning a number of activities over the next few months to commemorate this important milestone with both team members at the plant and across the commonwealth. Convis adds, "The past 20 years have been good for both TMMK and Kentucky, and we're looking forward to celebrating and sharing some of that excitement."
