Black, glossy and fast. Presenting the new Luna Rossa, the boat that will be challenging Alinghi for the 2007 Americas Cup. After the grey "Silver bullet", the new ITA 86 is black and shiny, a 26-metre long dark carbon torpedo. Its launch will be celebrated in the port of Valencia, in Spain, where Luna Rossa has its new headquarters, designed by Renzo Piano, recycling fifty sails used by the Prada team in previous editions.
It has taken a staggering 52 thousand hours of work to create the new Luna Rossa, under the direction of the New Zealander Richard Gillies, but the end result is truly breathtaking.
Skipper Francesco de Angelis hasn't taken his eyes of the newly-baptised creature, and just a few days from the launch, he has already taken her to see to try her out. To find out just how fast the Ita 86 will go, we will need to wait another few weeks, until reliable figures are available. The boat's competition debut, on the other hand, is set for the upcoming Act Eleven of the Louis Vuitton Cup, scheduled from 11 to 21 May - a not-to-be-missed opportunity to assess how much we should start to dream in view of next year's Americas Cup.
Alfa Romeo will be continuing its partnership with the Luna Rossa team as an Official Supplier, and will be closely following the races in the Louis Vuitton Cup scheduled between May and July.
